Under the loupe, the lodge's line gives it up. April's typist transposed two digits in the order's sale price, and the proof room, checking sheet against typed draft rather than arithmetic, passed it clean. The printed price is forty-one dollars low. A misprint, always. Typist typed, proof passed, counter obeyed, customer paid, register accepted, ledger expected, and forty-one dollars a week fell down the gap between two numbers each correct in its own kingdom. Frank should feel triumphant and does not. Thirty years teaches the taste of a solved case; this one holds a grain of sand. The misprint answers how, not why the leak ran all summer under an owner who checks his own sale sheets. He closes the archive, sheet in envelope, one name in mind, and the name has been serene since June.
