About Bolts of Cloth
In the dry-goods corner of the old country store, bolts of fabric stood upright along the shelves like a quilter's library, calico splashed with tiny flowers, gingham in crisp checks, smooth percale and soft flannel folded tight on their cardboard cores. A yardstick lay flat on the wooden counter, worn pale at the eighteen-inch mark from a thousand measured lengths, and glass-topped cases held buttons sorted by size and shank, spools of thread in every color, and a scatter of rickrack trim. The storekeeper knew her notions the way a librarian knows her shelves, and a yard of the right cloth, handed across that counter with a length of brown paper, could mean a new school dress or a Sunday shirt before the week was out.
