About Edison Lights Up Manhattan

On September 4, 1882, Thomas Edison's Pearl Street Station in lower Manhattan sent electricity humming through copper wires for the first time, turning on roughly 400 bulbs across a square mile of the city. Gas lamps had flickered on those same streets for decades, but the steady, clean glow of the new electric lights felt like something out of a dream. That single switch on a September evening set the pattern for every lit city street that followed, the poles, the grid, the quiet hum of current that still runs beneath modern life.
