About The First U.S. Coast Guard Is Established

On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the act that brought the Revenue Cutter Service into being, the earliest forerunner of today's United States Coast Guard. Ten armed cutters were commissioned to enforce tariff laws and keep America's young coastline secure, their crews cutting through Atlantic swells on the nation's first organized seagoing patrols. Salt air, taut rigging, and the steady pull of the tide defined the daily life of those first sailors, who served at a time when the new republic's prosperity depended on every ship that reached port safely.
