About The Chicago Fire and the Birth of Modern Building Codes
On October 8, 1871, fire swept through Chicago, burning for two days and leveling roughly a third of the city. In the years that followed, architects and engineers descended on the rubble with a radical idea: build higher, build smarter, and build to last, using fireproof brick, iron frames, and the structural steel that would give rise to the modern skyscraper. The disaster that seemed like an ending became one of the most consequential beginnings in the history of urban design, giving the world its first enforceable building codes and a skyline that still reaches for the sky.
