On August 22, 1864, representatives of twelve nations gathered in Geneva, Switzerland, and signed the First Geneva Convention, the founding document that gave the International Red Cross its legal standing and its universal emblem. The red cross on white was deliberately chosen as the reverse of the Swiss flag, honoring the country where the movement was born. From that single day of signing, a framework of organized relief for the sick and wounded in wartime spread across the globe, carried forward by nurses, volunteers, and delegates who believed that suffering deserved an answer beyond the battlefield.
