About Lady Liberty Arrives: June 17, 1885

On June 17, 1885, the French frigate Isère glided into New York Harbor carrying an extraordinary cargo: the Statue of Liberty, packed into 214 wooden crates. The colossal figure — a gift of friendship from France, designed by sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi with an iron framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel — had been disassembled in Paris for the long Atlantic crossing. Her raised torch, flowing robes, and seven-rayed crown would soon rise above the harbor on a granite pedestal, becoming one of the most recognized beacons of hope in the world.
