About Frida Kahlo: A Painter Unlike Any Other Is Born
On July 6, 1907, Frida Kahlo was born in Coyoacán, a cobblestone neighborhood on the southern edge of Mexico City, in the vivid blue house that would later become known as La Casa Azul. She painted through injury, illness, and heartbreak with a directness that startled the art world — rich marigold yellows, deep cobalt blues, and tangled vines filling canvases that were as much diary as masterpiece. Her self-portraits, often painted from a mirror rigged above her easel while she recovered in bed, gave the world an artist whose gaze has never lost its power to stop a viewer cold.
