About The Wizard of Oz Opens on Broadway

On October 17, 1903, the musical extravaganza "The Wizard of Oz" opened at the Majestic Theater near Columbus Circle in New York City, bringing L. Frank Baum's beloved 1900 novel roaring to life with elaborate costumes, specialty acts, and a chorus that filled the stage with color and movement. The production was a grand spectacle of its era, less faithful to the book than later adaptations, but irresistible to audiences who packed the theater night after night. Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Lion stepped from the page into the footlights, making the Emerald City feel, for the first time, like somewhere you could almost reach.
