About Joy to the World

Isaac Watts wrote "Joy to the World" in 1719 as a paraphrase of Psalm 98, imagining all creation breaking into song at the coming of the King. Lowell Mason set the words to their now-familiar tune in 1839, drawing inspiration partly from Handel, and the carol has rung out at Christmas ever since. From church pews to candlelit living rooms, its verses roll through fields and floods, rocks and hills, asking every corner of the earth to join the chorus.
