About Halloween Apples: Bobbing and Beyond
Long before candy bars filled plastic pumpkins, apples were the crown jewel of Halloween night, dunked for in cold washtubs, skewered on sticks and rolled in warm caramel, or pressed into cloudy, spiced cider that fogged up kitchen windows. The tradition of bobbing for apples stretches back to harvest festivals in the British Isles, where games of divination turned the simple act of catching a floating fruit into something almost magical. Orchards were at their peak in late October, and that sweet-tart crunch of a freshly picked apple, chilly with autumn air, became woven into the very feel of the season.
