About Forest Hills & the U.S. Open

Before the U.S. Open settled in Flushing Meadows, the American championships were played on the grass courts of the West Side Tennis Club in Forest Hills, Queens. The clubhouse had a Tudor look, and in the stands men sat in shirtsleeves and straw hats while the late August air smelled like cut lawn. It was a neighborhood place, with leafy streets, and the tennis felt close enough to hear the ball.
