About The Derby

On the first Saturday in May, Churchill Downs fills with the rustle of silks and the sweet weight of garlands, a blanket of red roses draped across the winner's neck. The gate springs, a field of three-year-olds launches onto the oval, and a furlong feels like forever. From the paddock where riders saddle up to the wire where fortunes are decided, the derby is the one race the whole country stops to watch.
