About Travel & Places
Established in 1872, Yellowstone became the world's first national park, set aside when Congress recognized that no private hand should own such a wonder. Beneath its two-million-plus acres, one of Earth's largest active volcanic systems drives thousands of geysers, hot springs, mudpots, and fumaroles — more hydrothermal features than anywhere else on the planet. Bison still cross the Lamar Valley in dark, unhurried herds, wolves move through the tree line at dusk, and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone glows ochre and gold where the river has carved straight down through volcanic rock.
