About Names for the Young

Every creature that comes into the world arrives with a name all its own. A mare nuzzles her foal in the early morning quiet; a ewe turns toward her lamb on wobbly new legs; a mother fox licks clean a kit barely bigger than a fist. These words, colt, cub, duckling, gosling, carry the whole feeling of small things just beginning, and the people who have always stopped to watch them.
