About The Pink Flamingo
Lesser flamingos gather by the hundreds of thousands on Lake Nakuru and other soda lakes of East Africa's Rift Valley. They feed with the head upside down, working the bill like a sieve to strain out blue-green algae and tiny shrimp. A great blue heron does it differently, standing stock-still in the reeds until a fish comes within reach of that spear-shaped bill. Storks, ibises, egrets and spoonbills work the same shallow margins, each with a bill shaped for its own way of eating.
