About The Proud Peacock
The common peafowl is native to India and Sri Lanka, and the blue peacock has been India's national bird since 1963. A mature male carries about 200 long feathers in his train, each tipped with an eyespot called an ocellus, and he can spread them into an arc taller than he is. Those feathers are upper-tail coverts, so the real tail stays hidden behind them, propping the whole fan up like a brace. In display he shivers the fan until it rattles and hums, and every bit of it is aimed at the peahens watching from the grass. Green peafowl from Southeast Asia are a different species, with scaled green and gold plumage instead of the familiar blue.
