Proverbs and Ecclesiastes together weave some of Scripture's most enduring portraits of friendship, the companion who speaks honest counsel, the helper who arrives in the hard season, the bond that holds when everything else gives way. "Two are better than one," the Teacher writes, "for if either falls, the one will lift up the other." It is a vision of friendship not as comfort alone, but as a kind of forging: as iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another, each made truer by the other's nearness.
