About Ripe Tomatoes

Few smells stop you mid-step the way a sun-warm tomato does, that green, dusty sharpness from the vine still clinging to the stem. At the farmers market, heirloom varieties line the table in every shade from deep rouge to pale gold, each one knobbed and imperfect and exactly right. A good beefsteak sliced thick on a board, a cluster of cherries still on the stem, a jar of slow-cooked sauce, the tomato has a way of making summer feel like it belongs to you.

How to play
