About At the Lathe
At the lathe, a rough blank becomes something round and alive. The turner braces the tool on the rest, nudges the bevel down, and in a single clean pass a leg tapers from thick to slender, oak shavings spiraling to the floor like ribbon. Bowl turning goes deeper still: hollowing end-grain or face-grain, reading the wood's figure as it spins, coaxing a curve that no other tool quite makes. It is one of the oldest machine arts, and a quiet shop full of the hum of the motor and the whisper of a sharp gouge feels like a place apart from the rest of the world.
How to play
