About The Wright Brothers

On the morning of December 17, 1903, on a strip of windswept dunes near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, Orville Wright climbed aboard a spruce-and-canvas machine and rose into a cold Atlantic headwind for twelve historic seconds. He and his brother Wilbur had spent years studying bird flight, stitching muslin over wooden frames, and testing gliders in the open air, all of it funded by a modest bicycle repair shop back home in Dayton, Ohio. The Flyer they built weighed just over 600 pounds and was steered by a hip cradle, yet it opened a door that the whole world would one day walk through.
