About Thomas Edison
Thomas Edison's laboratory in Menlo Park, New Jersey, hummed with the smell of chemicals and the scratch of pencils as dozens of experimenters worked through the night on his orders. In 1879 he demonstrated a practical incandescent lightbulb using a carbonized filament, and just two years earlier the phonograph had already astonished the world by playing back a human voice for the very first time. By the end of his life Edison held 1,093 U.S. patents, a record that still stands, covering everything from the telegraph transmitter to the birth of cinema.
