About Romantic Composers
Beethoven's Ninth Symphony premiered in Vienna in 1824, and after that composers seemed to feel they were allowed to say more. Pianos moved into parlors and Chopin wrote his nocturnes for them, small moonlit pieces meant for one player and a quiet room. Then Verdi and Wagner went the other way and built operas big enough that Wagner had to open his own theater to hold them.
