About Nat King Cole
Nathaniel Adams Coles was born in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1919 and grew up in Chicago, where his mother played organ at church and he learned piano. He made his name in the 1930s and 40s with a small jazz trio, piano, guitar and bass, and only gradually let the singing take over. By the time Capitol Records had him in the studio, that unhurried baritone was in living rooms everywhere, and it still turns up every December.
