About Songbirds of the Swing Era

Before she had a record deal, a big band singer had a bus seat and a handful of songs to get through before the dancers wanted a faster one. Ella Fitzgerald joined Chick Webb's orchestra in 1935, and Doris Day sang with Les Brown's band before Hollywood called. Most of the great ones learned the trade in ballrooms from Harlem to Hollywood, then went out on their own once radio and records made a single voice enough. It's a good stretch of American music to spend a cup of coffee with.

How to play
