About Music & Film
A great dance hall had its own grammar: the hushed moment before the band struck up, the creak of a waxed floor under a hundred shuffling feet, the bloom of a corsage pinned carefully at the wrist. Brass sections swelled from a raised bandstand while couples moved through foxtrots and waltzes as naturally as breathing. The night ended not with a clock but with a last slow number and the gradual dimming of the spotlight.
