About The Banjo and the Fiddle

Long before amplifiers and recording studios, front-porch music was built from whatever was at hand, a fiddle carved from local wood, a banjo with a gourd body, a washboard pressed into service as percussion. Old-time and Appalachian traditions wove together African, Scottish, Irish, and Cherokee influences into a sound as rugged and open as the mountain hollows it came from. The music traveled: at square dances and barn raisings, on flatboats and in mining camps, carrying melody and memory across a young country.
