About The Tearjerker
In the 1930s and 40s the big studios knew exactly what a Saturday audience wanted, and often it was a good cry. Warner Bros., MGM and Universal turned out melodramas full of devoted mothers and doomed romances, with a long goodbye on a foggy train platform if the budget allowed. Women's pictures were a real trade, and the strings swelled right on cue.
