About On the Variety Show
In the early 1960s, variety shows ruled the airwaves on both sides of the Atlantic, a single broadcast could turn four lads from Liverpool into household names overnight. The stage was everything: the hot wash of the spotlight, the hush before the compere announced the next act, the roar that followed the first chord. A debut on one of those programs meant your face was suddenly on every screen in the country, your name up in lights on the marquee by morning.
