About FDR's Fireside Chats

On March 12, 1933, a week into his presidency, Franklin Roosevelt sat before a microphone and explained to ordinary Americans how banks worked and why they could trust them again. Families gathered in parlors and kitchens around big wooden radios, and the voice that came out sounded like a neighbor talking, not a statesman giving orders. He kept at it through the Depression and the war years, about thirty talks in all, and people remembered where they sat.

How to play

  1. 1
