Before television claimed the living room, the radio console stood like a piece of furniture, polished wood cabinet, glowing dial, and a tuning needle that swept slowly across the band. Finding a distant station was half the pleasure: you'd ease the knob past the static, hear a voice or a melody break through the hiss, then hold your breath as the signal steadied and the room went quiet.
