About Columbus Reaches the Americas

On October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew made landfall in the Bahamas after more than two months at sea, the first Europeans of the Age of Sail to reach the Americas. They had crossed the Atlantic aboard three vessels: the Niña, the Pinta, and the Santa María, navigating by compass, astrolabe, and the stars overhead. That morning rewrote the map of the known world, opening an era of contact between continents that neither side had known the other to be.
