About Mayflower Sets Sail for the New World

On September 6, 1620, the Mayflower slipped out of Plymouth, England, and pointed her bow westward into the Atlantic, a small, creaking merchant vessel carrying 102 passengers through autumn gales toward an uncertain shore. After sixty-six days at sea, the ship made landfall near present-day Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and the passengers drew up the Mayflower Compact, one of the earliest frameworks for self-governance in the Americas. The colony they founded at Plymouth endured a devastating first winter, yet it took root and became one of the most storied chapters in American memory.
