About Meriwether Lewis Is Born: A Future Explorer Arrives
On August 18, 1774, Meriwether Lewis was born in Albemarle County, Virginia, into a world where the western edge of the continent was little more than rumor and speculation. Three decades later he would co-lead the Corps of Discovery overland to the Pacific, filling journals with meticulous notes on rivers, wildlife, and terrain no American expedition had ever recorded. The prairies stretched endless before his party, the rapids tested every canoe, and the frontier rewarded every ounce of their courage with wonders that reshaped the map of a young nation.
