About Mother Teresa Receives the Nobel Peace Prize

On August 27, 1910, a girl named Anjezë Bojaxhiu was born in Skopje, in what is now North Macedonia, the woman the world would come to know as Mother Teresa. She arrived in Calcutta in 1929 and never truly left, founding the Missionaries of Charity in 1950 and spending decades in the city's streets, shelters, and homes for the dying. In 1979 she accepted the Nobel Peace Prize on behalf of the poorest of the poor, donating the prize money to her mission and asking that the celebratory banquet be cancelled so the funds could feed the hungry instead.
