About Triton: Neptune's Captured Moon
On October 10, 1846, just 17 days after Neptune itself was identified, British astronomer William Lassell spotted a faint companion circling the planet and named it Triton. The moon turned out to be one of the most remarkable objects in the outer solar system: a frigid, nitrogen-frosted world whose orbit runs backward against Neptune's spin, hinting at a violent gravitational capture long ago. Triton's surface crackles with geysers of nitrogen gas, erupting into a near-vacuum sky under the faint, distant light of the sun.
