About Mount Vesuvius Buries and Preserves Pompeii

On August 24, 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted with catastrophic force near the Bay of Naples, burying the thriving Roman city of Pompeii under meters of volcanic ash and pumice in a matter of hours. The city had been humming with ordinary life, bakers pulling loaves from stone ovens, merchants haggling beside painted walls, citizens debating in the open forum, all of it stopped and sealed in place. What the ash preserved was extraordinary: colorful frescoes still bright on plaster walls, carbonized loaves still sitting in bakery ovens, and the unmistakable outline of a city that had woken up that morning with no idea it would never see tomorrow.
