About Apollo 11 Splashes Down Safely

On July 24, 1969, the Apollo 11 command module Columbia splashed down in the Pacific Ocean, completing the first crewed journey to the Moon and back. Navy divers reached the bobbing capsule within minutes, and Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins were lifted safely aboard the USS Hornet, eight days after launch and a world away from the Sea of Tranquility. Church bells rang, strangers embraced in the streets, and for one brilliant summer morning the whole Earth seemed to exhale at once.
