About Atlantis Meets Mir
On June 29, 1995, Space Shuttle Atlantis eased toward Russia's Mir space station some 245 miles above the planet and locked into a docking hatch, creating the largest spacecraft ever assembled in orbit at that time. The mission was a deliberate act of partnership — American astronauts and Russian cosmonauts sharing meals, science, and the peculiar quiet of a station humming between day and night every ninety minutes. That single docking opened a decade of joint research that helped lay the groundwork for the International Space Station.
