About NASA Is Born
On July 29, 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the National Aeronautics and Space Act into law, officially bringing NASA into existence and charging it with the peaceful exploration of the cosmos. The agency inherited engineers, facilities, and ambitions from its predecessor, the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics, and within months was already planning the missions that would define a generation. From that single stroke of a pen, the dream of orbit, of astronauts riding rockets beyond the blue horizon, became the official business of the United States.
