About Chuck Yeager Breaks the Sound Barrier

On October 14, 1947, Captain Chuck Yeager strapped into the Bell X-1 rocket plane, a bullet-shaped craft painted bright orange, and was dropped from a B-29 mothership high above California's Mojave Desert. Despite two cracked ribs from a riding accident just days before, he lit the rocket engine, punched through Mach 1.06 at 43,000 feet, and the world heard a sonic boom for the first time from a piloted aircraft. The sound barrier, long feared as a wall that would tear any plane apart, turned out to be a threshold, and Yeager crossed it with a quiet, unshakeable calm that became the very definition of the right stuff.
