On July 31, 1964, NASA's Ranger 7 spacecraft did something no machine had ever done: it sent back more than 4,000 sharp, close-up photographs of the Moon's surface before making its planned impact in a smooth lava plain called Mare Cognitum. The images arrived crisp and detailed, craters, dust, and ancient rock laid bare for the first time, giving scientists a real surface to study rather than a blurred disk glimpsed through a telescope. It was a quiet but pivotal moment, proof that America could reach the Moon and look it in the eye.
