On September 12, 1962, President John F. Kennedy stood before 35,000 people at Rice University in Houston, Texas, and delivered one of the most stirring speeches in American history. "We choose to go to the Moon," he declared, not because it was easy, but because it was hard, staking the nation's ambition on a deadline of a decade. The words rang across a stadium and then across the world, turning a dream of starlight and rockets into a national mission that would end with footprints on another world.
