About Sputnik Circles the Earth: The Space Age Begins
On October 4, 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite, and humanity was no longer earthbound in the same way. Roughly the size of a beach ball and weighing about 184 pounds, the polished metal sphere arced into low orbit and sent back a steady radio beep that anyone with the right equipment could hear crackling through the night sky. That small, repeating signal was the sound of a door swinging open, the Space Age had begun.
