About New Horizons Reaches Pluto
On July 14, 2015, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft swept within about 7,800 miles of Pluto's surface — the first time any mission had ever reached the distant dwarf planet. The images it radioed back revealed soaring water-ice mountains, plains of nitrogen ice, and a vast heart-shaped region that captured the world's imagination overnight. That frozen world, once just a dot of light since its discovery in 1930, suddenly had a face.
