On August 25, 1981, NASA's Voyager 2 swept to within about 41,000 miles of Saturn's cloud tops, delivering the closest and sharpest views humanity had ever seen of the ringed planet. The images revealed intricate ringlet structures, dark spokes rippling across the B ring, and the haunting faces of moons like Enceladus, a small, icy world that gleamed far brighter than scientists had expected. It was a moment when the solar system stopped being a set of distant lights and became a place of breathtaking, tangible detail.
