About The Panama Canal Opens for Business
On August 14, 1914, the Panama Canal opened to commercial traffic, and the first ships slipped through a narrow ribbon of water connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. What had once meant a grueling voyage around the tip of South America, nearly 8,000 extra miles, was now a passage of roughly 50 miles through jungle and stone. Locks lifted vessels up and over the Continental Divide, a feat of engineering that rewrote the map of global trade almost overnight.
