About The Washington Monument Opens to the Public

On October 9, 1888, the Washington Monument opened to the public for the very first time, inviting Americans to ride a steam-powered elevator to the apex of the world's tallest stone structure and drink in a sweeping vista of the capital below. Rising 555 feet of white marble and granite above the National Mall, the obelisk had been decades in the making, construction began in 1848, paused through war and funding crises, and resumed in 1879 before the capstone was finally set in 1884. Even today, standing at its base and tilting your head back, you feel the full weight of the tribute the nation laid in stone for its first president.
