About Magic Kingdom Opens Its Gates
On October 1, 1971, Walt Disney World opened its doors in Orlando, Florida, welcoming the very first guests through the arched gates of the Magic Kingdom. Walt Disney himself had quietly purchased the land throughout the 1960s, envisioning a resort far grander than anything before it, though he passed away in 1966 and never saw opening day. That October morning, crowds streamed down Main Street, U.S.A., gazed up at Cinderella Castle, and stepped into a world where fantasy, tomorrow, and liberty all had an address.
