About The Sydney Opera House Opens Its Doors
On October 20, 1973, Queen Elizabeth II officially opened the Sydney Opera House in a grand harbor-side ceremony, unveiling a building that had taken sixteen years to construct on Bennelong Point. Architect Jørn Utzon's soaring shell-shaped roof vaults, clad in more than a million cream and white ceramic tiles, had already become one of the most recognizable silhouettes on earth before a single curtain rose. Inside, the Concert Hall, the Opera Theater, the Drama Theater, and a lively foyer welcomed performers and audiences to a stage that would go on to host ballet, opera, orchestral music, and theater for decades to come.
